PRESIDENT BARROW LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR 204.7KM FEEDER ROADS ACROSS THE GAMBIA TO BOOST COMERCIAL AGRICULTURE

His Excellency, President Adama Barrow on April 2, 2026 concluded on a six-day nationwide tour during which he laid the foundation stones for 26 feeder roads measuring a total of 204.7km. These roads sub-projects are spread across 5 out of the 7 admistrative regions of the Gambia.

The intervention is being financed by the World Bank through a grant under the Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (GIRAV) to the tune of $25 million.

President Barrow was accompanied by a high-powered delegation including cabinet ministers, World Bank officials, other senior government officials, GIRAV project Team, supporters of the ruling National Peoples Party and the media.

Speaking at meetings during the tour, President Barrow expressed gratitude to the World Bank for the support. He explained that the GIRAV feeder roads forms part of his government’s efforts to improve rural connectivity for the development of commercial agriculture and rural economies, leaving no one behind. He challenged the contractors to honour their obligations and measure up to expectations.

Mr. Franklin Mutahakana, World Bank Resident Representative in The Gambia highlighted the interventions and impacts of the GIRAV project on lives and livelihoods. He said: “I was proud to join H.E. President Adama Barrow at the groundbreaking GIRAV Feeder Roads Programme. With US$108M in support, GIRAV is strengthening rural connectivity, boosting agricultural productivity, and linking farmers to markets across the Gambia”.

Mr. Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Managing Director, National Roads Authority which is the government institution leading the implementation of component 1.4 of the GIRAV project assured that quality and standard roads will be delivered by the contractors and on time.
